Church at Night

This church is in a city called Seixal, a small town south of the Tejo river from Lisbon. I saw it light up one night as I was walking by and felt it needed to be painted. It’s not a cathedral, just a simple church. The light at night drew me to it. Perhaps it is a metaphor of the light shining in the darkness.

“A bruised reed he will not break and a smoldering wick he will not stuff out.”

I love the simplicity of the composition, the grass and tree in the foreground, the dark sky and the lit church. It is a very satisfying painting. It also reminds me of what I love so much about the Portuguese culture. They are one of the overlooked least recognized countries of western Europe, they are a very humble people without a strong drive to be recognized, yet even the simple things of their culture are so rich.
